Chapter 9
Gabriel awoke with his head in Ianâs lap. They sat on the couch, sunlight streaming through the large window behind them.
âWhereâs Grey?â Gabrielâs heart beat hard in his chest as he recalled the events of the previous night. Thereâd been an intruder alert, and Grey had gone to investigate before he and Ian had had a chance to give Gabriel their mating bites.
âHeâs in bed asleep.â Ian stood and stretched.
âWhy are we in here?â Gabriel asked. He remembered theyâd been sitting up, awaiting the alphaâs return.
âYou fell asleep, and I didnât want to disturb you. Donât worry, I was pretty comfortable, or I would have had Grey pick you up.â
Gabriel blushed at having slept with his head pillowed on Ianâs lap all night. Heâd been pretty scared, and the betaâs presence had soothed him.
âDid they catch whoever it was?â
âNo.â Ian opened the door to the terrace, letting in the crisp autumn air. âGrey said they couldnât find a trace of scent. They think perhaps it was a rogue trying to steal some food.â
Gabriel was surprised his mates had held a conversation without it awakening him. He really must have been out of it.
âIf someone was that hungry, wouldnât we give them something to eat?â he asked, covertly adjusting himself in his pants. Heâd like to think it was morning wood, but he knew better; he found the thought of Grey and Ian observing him in sleep oddly arousing.
Ian shrugged. âMaybe they were too scared. The guards scented werewolf, but thatâs all they know.â
Gabriel stood. âIâll cook us some breakfast.â Heâd taken to cooking most of the meals they had at home. He enjoyed it, and it made him feel like he was contributing.
âWould you put some coffee on first?â
âOf course.â
Ian disappeared into the bathroom, and Gabriel set about making the coffee. Heâd been really worried about Grey the night before. He hadnât realized heâd become so attached to the alpha. It was easy to love warm, calm, even-tempered Ian. In the past, Gabriel had labeled what he felt for Grey as pure physical attraction. But the night before, when Grey had charged out of the house at the sound of the guardâs howl, the omega had been filled with a terror that spoke of something deeper than lust.
In spite of what Grey and Ian had said about why theyâd held off biting him so far, Gabriel couldnât shake the feeling of being a third wheel. The sex was goodâmore than good. Both Ian and Grey payed plenty of attention to Gabriel in bed. But did they love him as they loved one another? Theyâd had years together, and it showed in every touch and look that passed between the two. Gabriel was just the omegaâthe one theyâd taken to bear them children. They had to fuck him in order to do that. Sure, he wasnât in heat, but all werewolves knew it was important to copulate as much as possible in order to stimulate fertility so when the heat did come on, the omegaâs body would be ready and receptive to the sperm.
